JPORP FAQs

1. What does it mean to be the “official journal “ of IPOS?

JPORP was established in 2017 by the IPOS Board to be the Society’s only official journal, because the Board wanted to provide an open access journal as a member benefit. Additionally the journal has the benefit of providing important income to support IPOS and its members. It is overseen by the Board in an agreement with publishers.

2. When and why did IPOS establish an open access journal?

The IPOS Board decided in 2017 to establish an open access publishing format – this would ensure that the research developments in our field are available to all, without the limitation of needing to subscribe or belong to an institution that subscribes. This makes the work fully accessible to clinicians and researchers across the globe, to patients and families, and particularly people in low and middle income countries who disproportionately do not have access to material behind paywalls. Previously (prior to 2017) IPOS members needed to pay a subscription cost to access the previous journal, but this is no longer the case – access to the journal is free. Open access also provides a venue for research funded by public funding agencies that require publication in an open access journal. Open access also provides immediate worldwide electronic delivery. See our editorial about the benefits of Open Access here https://journals.lww.com/jporp/Pages/openaccess.aspx

3. Why is there a publication fee?

The Article Processing Charge (APC) covers the cost to the publishing company of their administrative and editorial support and hosting of the journal . A small proportion of the costs are returned to IPOS to support IPOS activities. These costs have been kept as low as possible and are very favourable compared with costs across journals generally. We offer discounts to IPOS members, fee waivers to authors from Low and Middle Income countries and for papers from IPOS committees or initiatives.

4. At what point in submission do I need to pay the publication cost?

Publication costs only need to be paid when the paper is formally accepted for publication. There is no cost for submitting your paper or the review process itself.

5. What discounts apply and how do I know if I am eligible?

Please see the guidelines for authors regarding publication costs and discounts for IPOS members

6. How does the journal support IPOS members?

IPOS members get a discount on APCs (publication fees). Other support includes:

  • An early career researcher peer review mentorship program,
  • Providing an avenue for publication of outputs from IPOS committees and conferences,
  • English language and editing support from the publishers if needed,
  • Paperpal “preflight assessment”  to assist in preparation of manuscripts
  • Publons for reviewers for their records.

This is alongside the general benefit to authors of open access to support dissemination of research.

7. When will the journal be indexed?

Indexing enables the journal to be listed on key search databases. We are pleased to announce the  journal has been recognized by SCOPUS database and we are in the process of review for indexing through a number of avenues (Web of Science, SCOPUS, PubMed, DOAJ) are currently awaiting outcomes of these applications. This application process is very detailed and we are hopeful that we will have further news in the near future. When successful all papers published from the time of Journal inception, even prior to the date of acceptance for indexing, will be recognized and searchable on the indexed databases.

8. How does the journal support authors from LMICs?

As detailed above, authors from low and middle income countries are eligible for a waiver of publication costs, along with specific editing and language support if needed where English is not first language. The editors are also keen to work closely with authors from these areas to provide any advice and support as it is an important goal that we promote dissemination of their work, and broaden the impact and global relevance of research published in the journal.

9. How can I assist IPOS through the journal?

JPORP is your IPOS journal and is there to be a vehicle to support the dissemination of the high quality research being undertaken by IPOS members, and promote IPOS as a leader in psychosocial aspects of cancer internationally. You can assist and support the IPOS journal by listing yourself in our reviewer database along with your areas of expertise and interest, and providing reviews of submitted manuscripts – this is a very valuable way to contribute and assist the work of our international community, and an excellent way to gain a good understanding of the review and publication process through working with our editorial team , as well as keeping abreast of work being undertaken across our field. For many this is an important part of our scholarly role and contribution and is helpful in our own writing and academic development.

Other ways you can support the journal and IPOS is through encouraging submission of manuscripts to the journal as the journal of your Society, and promoting the journal with your peers and colleagues. This can be done through communicating news about recent publications, disseminating key papers of interest, to remind colleagues of the opportunity provided by the Society’s journal.
