IPOS Member Profile: Marco Antonio Catarinella (Italy)

"IPOS has given me the opportunity to connect with an international community of professionals who share a common commitment: improving the lives of people affected by cancer . As a clinician, psychotherapist, sexologist, and early-career researcher, I value IPOS as a place where science, clinical practice, education, and advocacy come together . Through IPOS I can exchange ideas across disciplines and cultures while contributing to important conversations on sexuality, inclusivity, psychosocial wellbeing, and person-centered cancer care."

Cancer does not affect only the body; it also reshapes identity, relationships, sexuality, and the way people imagine their future . My professional and research interests focus on these dimensions of the cancer experience . Working within the Health Clinical Psychology Unit at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, I combine clinical practice, teaching, and research as a Clinical and Health Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Sexologist, and PhD Candidate in Psychology . My main interests lie at the intersection of psycho-oncology, sexuality, gender, and psychosocial health .

Over the years, I have worked with cancer patients and their families in both clinical and research settings, exploring topics such as quality of life, supportive care, fertility preservation, and psychosocial adaptation to illness . My current research focuses on inclusive oncology care, including a project investigating the effectiveness and inclusivity of supportive interventions for LGBTQIA+ cancer patients . More broadly, I am particularly interested in understanding how oncology services can better respond to the psychosocial, relational, and sexual health needs of sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals throughout the cancer journey . Beyond my professional life, I am passionate about music, theatre, dance, and creative writing . I believe that both science and the arts help us understand what it means to be human, especially in moments of vulnerability, transformation, and growth .
