Message from Congress Co-Chairs Sedat Ozkan, MD and Hayriye Elbi, MD

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As President of IPOS, and on behalf of the IPOS Board and the IPOS Federation of National Societies, it is my great pleasure to invite you to join us in Antalya, Turkey on 16-20 October 2011 for the 13th World Congress of Psycho-Oncology.

Professor Sedat Ozkan is our Congress Chair, and we are privileged to have him and his associates in Turkey to work alongside us on this wonderful event.

The Turkish Congress and Scientific Committees, in collaboration with the IPOS International Scientific Committee, Education and World Congress Committees, are working with determination and enthusiasm to help make this event an enormous success and a truly memorable occasion.

We are fortunate to be able to build on the great success of the 12th World Congress held in Quebec City in 2010, where over 700 attendees from more than 40 countries around the world gathered to exchange ideas, learn, teach, network and support the field of psycho-oncology.

The 13th World Congress in Antalya promises to retain the best scientific and teaching elements of past IPOS congresses in the most wonderful location on the Turkish Riviera and amidst the history and antiquities of Turkey’s remarkable civilisation.

The theme of the Antalya Congress is “Integrating the Psycho-social Domain into Routine Cancer Care: Bridging Continents and Cultures for Global Cancer Support.” The program will be innovative, exciting and rich in content that should appeal to a wide range of professionals working at many different levels and within many cultural contexts as part of multidisciplinary cancer care.

The very popular pre-Congress Psychosocial Academy workshops will be offered again at the IPOS World Congress in Antalya. The Academies will take place on 16 - 17 October 2011 at the site of the Congress.  I strongly encourage you to attend the Congress as well as the pre-congress Psychosocial Academy Workshops.

In 2008 we established the IPOS Federation of National Societies. We will again hold the annual Federation Board meeting at the Antalya World Congress.  If your national society has not yet joined the Federation, or you need more information on how to join or build a national society, please plan to attend the Federation Board meeting in Antalya.

IPOS plans to have a limited number of travel scholarships for attendees from low- and middle-income nations and further information on how to apply for a scholarship will be announced on the IPOS website soon.

We are fortunate to be able to hold our World Congress in this beautiful area of Turkey in a resort that offers many attractions. Close to historic city sites, and with the ambiance of the eastern Mediterranean, you will have the opportunity to learn and share your experiences in an informal and very welcoming cultural context.

Turkey bridges the continents, and our local hosts will reach out to give you the best experience in which share ideas and develop the challenging work we do with cancer patients, their families and carers throughout the world.

See you in Antalya!
