Monday, 9 June 2008 - 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
presented by Barrie Cassileth PhD, with collaboration and translation from Pilar Lianes MD

Presented in English with Spanish translation / En Inglés con traducción al Español

Target Audience:

Anyone who works with cancer patients should be armed with information about useful complementary therapies, dangerous approaches with false claims, and how to distinguish between the two. The question of herbs and other botanicals in the cancer care context is equally important. These and related issues will be discussed.

Workshop Objectives:

1. Understand public interest in Integrative medicine in various areas of the world.

2. Differentiate between useful complementary therapies and potentially harmful “alternatives.”

3. Explain and appropriately recommend complementary therapies.

4. Understand the role of herbs, other botanicals and other dietary supplements in cancer care.

5. Access readily available resources for solid information.

Workshop Description:

This Workshop will be an opportunity for broad discussion of complementary and alternative therapies, their utility, evidence base or lack of same, and appropriate application in the oncology setting. Substantial time will be allotted for questions and discussion. Broad cancer patient interest in touch therapies, acupuncture, music, yoga and other mind-body approaches, nutrition and fitness, and in questionable approaches, is an international phenomenon. Many members of the public require assistance in understanding the value of some therapies and the problems inherent in others. Herbs and other botanical agents also will be reviewed, along with other dietary supplements. All of us who work with cancer patients should know the basics so that we can respond to questions and effectively guide our patients.
