About the Palace Hotel
The Palace Hotel was built in 1912, during the reign of King Alfonso
XIII, at the former palace of the Dukes of Medinaceli, an emblematic
building of Madrid, becoming the largest and most modern hotel
in Europe at the time (the only one to have bathrooms and telephones
in each room!). Since then, it has remained an active part of city
life and is the venue for national and international events that
are relevant to the history of the country and the world. Hence,
it became the venue for the 1991 Peace Conference where Arabs and
Jews first negotiated.
Architecturally, it was built in the style of the big Parisian
buildings of the Belle-Epoque. Its wide lobby is beautifully decorated
with wall paintings representing Italian gardens of the Renaissance,
but the most emblematic space of all is its magnificent hall Rotunda
crowned by a dome of crystal, an authentic Art-Nouveau jewel. Strategically
located opposite to the Congress of Deputies, the Prado Museum
and the Villahermosa Palace (Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum), it majestically
dominates Neptune´s Plaza and the Avenue of El Prado. It
has been home to artists, intellectuals and politicians. Spanish
painters such as Picasso and Zuloaga, writers like García
Lorca, Hemingway and Blasco Ibañez, Sarah Bernhard, Serge
Diaghilev, and many others, without forgetting the mysterious Mata-Hari,
were frequent clients. The efforts in supporting this singular
palace in mint condition of conservation has been worth obtaining
its recognition as a building of Cultural Interest.
Other Social Activities
IPOS is currently working to assemble information about tours
in Madrid and day trips to other locations in Spain so that
attendees can book their own social activities while visiting
Spain.
When information on those tours is available, it will be posted
to
this page.
