Workshop Description:
This workshop will open with a review of scientific research demonstrating the protective influence of exercise on cancer treamtent side-effects and risk of recurrence. Benefits will be discussed including: decreased fatigue, nausea, neutropenia, anemia, pain, and risk of recurrence; and improved energy, daily functioning, quality of life, cognitive functioning, and sleep. We will follow with an introduction into Customized Exercise, a style of exercise designed specifically for safety and comfort through cancer treatment and recovery. We will give examples of the use of Customized Exercise in 2 survivorship programs: The Wellness Community; and Hematology Oncology Northwest, an outpatient cancer clinic. Lastly, we will provide instruction in Customized Exercise so that workshop participants can experience it first hand, and understand the practical benefits on both a personal and professional level. It is our intention and hope that participants will gain from this workshop a greater knowledge of exercise benefits they were unaware of previously, inspiration and confidence in recommending exercise to their patients, and, personally, rejuvenation physically, emotionally, and mentally!
