Psychopathology in Cancer: How to Assess, Diagnose, and Treat Depression and Confusional States

Workshop Objectives:

1. The attendee shall be able to understand the main psychopathological symptoms secondary to cancer and the way to diagnose them.

2. The attendee shall be able to understand difference between sadness, demoralization and depression.

3. The attendee shall be able to increase his/her knowledge on confusional states (delirium) in cancer patients and their implications.

4. The attendee shall be able to update his/her knowledge o the most useful and recent treatment.

Workshop Description:

The literature regarding psychopathological symptoms in cancer patients had increase over the last 20 years. In this 1-day workshop the main psychopathological dimensions in cancer will be explores, with particular reference to the vast area of depression and depressive disorders and confusional states given the high prevalence of both disorders and their implications for the quality of life of the patients and their family members. Diagnostic instruments will be presented, the most appropriate ways to deal with patients and families will be examined by using simulated scenario and work in small groups and an update on treatment will be also given to participants. In order to increase the efficacy of the workshop, a maximum number of 20 people will be accepted.
