Training Healthcare Professionals How to Communicate about Randomised Controlled Trials

Workshop Objectives:

The attendee shall be able to:

• Know more about patients’ attitudes towards randomisation and preferences for different descriptions of randomisation.
• Understand more of the communication difficulties experiences by healthcare professionals when discussing trials.
• Be aware of interventions that have been shown to assist healthcare professionals in these areas.

Workshop Description:

In this workshop, participants will have an opportunity to experience at least 2 of the modules developed by Professor Lesley Fallowfield and Dr Val Jenkins and successfully evaluated (Jenkins et al BMJ, 2005). The workshop is highly interactive with considerable participation from delegates required. Workshop will include some didactic presentations, group and individual exercises and facilitator led discussions about DVD’s of doctors, nurses and patients involved in a variety of different cancer clinical trials. Participants will receive videotapes and an accompanying handbook for their own use. The workshop is especially aimed at communication skills teachers, doctors and research nurses.
